Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects more than 37.3 million Americans. Per the CDC about half of all people with diabetes have some kind of nerve damage with feet and legs most often affected. In addition to nerve damage and loss of feeling in the feet, diabetics can also be significantly more susceptible to foot calluses, ulcers, poor circulation, skin changes, and lower limb amputation.

In order to help prevent foot complications and lower limb amputations many insurance companies will assist in covering Therapeutic Shoes and Inserts for those with qualifying foot conditions. All prosthetic, orthotic, and pedorthic patients will need to obtain a prescription from their physician (physician notes if required for device) for an orthotic or prosthetic device, including therapeutic shoes.

Medical Documentation Requirements

Medicare has strict requirements pertaining to the fulfillment of diabetic shoes and foot orthotics by suppliers. These requirements have a specific timeline that must be adhered to by both the patient and the facility. The following outlines the steps that need to be followed:

1. To facilitate proper processing, please bring the following information to your evaluation appointment:

a. A prescription for all required diabetic devices such as shoes, inserts, shoe modifications, or partial toe filler, signed at an in-person appointment within the last 6 months, including your diagnosis and diabetic treatment history.

b. A Certifying Statement of Medical Necessity (CMN) completed by an MD or DO that is treating your diabetic condition signed within the last 3 months. Physician notes required verifying diabetes and foot conditions.

2. After the above paperwork is obtained an appointment can then be scheduled in our Strongsville center for an evaluation. During the consult, we will take your measurements for Therapeutic shoes and inserts.

3. Please note that it may take up to 6 weeks to process paperwork and on occasion supply chain issues may affect shoe arrival time.

4. Once all above is completed we will schedule your fitting and delivery appointment in person at our Strongsville center.
